3 Tips to Rocking your Engagement Session

Your engagement photoshoot is coming up, and you have some butterflies. How should you behave, what to wear and where to have your session are probably all questions going through your mind. Apart from having this time to take a breather with your partner, before all the wedding planning and vendor emails to respond back to, this is such a wonderful day to really get to tell your love story, spend some quality time together and get to know your wedding photographer. Here are the 3 of the best engagement session photo tips for rocking your couple photos.

Tried and tested, these tips will guarantee to help you get the best out of your engagement session, finish your shoot with gorgeous photos, high spirits and, a new BFF (hint, that’ll be your wedding photographer! )

Take a Deep Breath, Relax

We all have a story to tell, and this is all bout telling your love story. Most couples get worried about the ‘posing or how to act’ during a photoshoot. But unless you’re a professional model, it’s not your job to know how to behave! Very simply, just be yourself. Yes, it sounds cheesy and very ‘A La Hollywood’ movie, but the reality is the more relaxed, excited, and yourself you are on the day of the shoot, the more authentic and wonderful your photos will come out.

The posing and planning is not down to you. Your photographer is there to guide you into those effortlessly, wildly romantic, carefree, intimate moments you love picturing when scrolling through Instagram #PerfectEngagementShoot. You. Just have to bring your energy, love, and excitement. Not too bad right?! Because at the end of it all, these photos will be for you both, not for social media or your parents, but to encompass just a glimpse of what it was truly like at the beginning of your journey and all the love you have for each other.

Wear What is Comfortable

While it’s tempting to get new clothes for the day, opt instead for your favorite outfit. If shirts and formal dresses are not you, then why start now?! Your session is meant to represent who you both are, together at this time in your life, so if your idea of feeling awesome is putting on your skinny jeans and that cute worn in black jacket, go for it. There’s nothing more irritating than not feeling yourself in your new clothes the day of, both physically and metaphorically. But, if you do decide to go on a shopping spree to get something fresh, try it on before, like that you’ll know exactly how it moves with you and most importantly, how you feel wearing it.

Compliment your outfits. No need to be matchy-matchy, but go for the same aesthetic. Try to stay away from distracting patterns and logos. Even jewelry could distract from your look if its large and eye-catching. Remember, these photos are about capturing your emotions and love above anything else. You’ll be moving, spinning, and kissing, so no need to risk an eye injury with a flying necklace pendant, right!

Location, Location

Work with your photographer for a location that will really compliment you as a couple. Your engagement session should be 100% customized to you. What works for one couple doesn’t necessarily fit another. So, if you are super outgoing and love to be in the city, if downtown is where you had your first date, grab your love, your photographer and head down to that bar, coffee shop, neighborhood and have some fun with your engagement session. Reminisce on that time you felt all the butterflies, that fluster of emotion, how they laughed with their whole body to your silly joke or shot you a shy grin while answering a question.

Or if you’re a bit more introverted and love being in your own little bubble, opt for a cozy, intimate At-home session instead. There’s always an opportunity to head out of the city too. Getting out on the open road, to a quiet nature trail could be just what you’re both about, ending up with a stunning scenic location for your backdrop with just you, a few mountains and a quiet breeze running through the trees.

You can bring some props too, making it even more bespoke and special! A bottle of bubbly, your favorite guitar and a quilted blanket, or even your Fur-baby! The more of yourself you bring to your awesome engagement shoot, the more comfortable you’ll feel and this will absolutely shine through in your photos.
