Just before COVID-19 hit Spain hard, I was traveling through Madrid for a day, on my way to visit family further south in Malaga, Spain. Waking up early, I spent the day simply walking the city streets, for what became hours.
It was a perfect day, a slight breeze, the sun shining; most people were out, drinking at cafes, walking together chatting, or simply lying on the fresh-cut grass in Retiro park. My fascination with doors and keyholes took me through the Salamanca, Goya, and Ibiza neighborhoods. Wandering slowly as I listened to some easy lo-fi hip hop playlists, sipping a black coffee from the corner shop with no set path planned.
For me, each painted door, towering archway, and enticing lock became more beautiful than the last. Something about the mystery of what lies beyond, lives lived behind the veiled protection of their keyed armor. So many stories unfolding, and unfolded, going through, crashing past, lingering by their archways, etching the surrounding paint as keys were aimed to unlock each unknown entrance. I can’t help wonder and be drawn closer, for they hold worlds in each of their carvings and metals yet to be discovered.
